The National Organic Program, developed by the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service to meet the requirements of the Organic Foods Production Act of 1990, established standards and a certification program for producers of organic agricultural products. The regulations included standards for production and handling, labeling, certification and accreditation that apply to organic foods and cosmetics. For more information, go to www.ams.usda.gov/nop.
Founded in 1991 in France, ECOCERT provides certification and inspection for organic farming, foods, cosmetics and ecological detergents. A worldwide leader in organic certification processes, it develops standards and also acts as an agent for established country-based organic certification programs, such USDA NOP.
